MY EXPERIENCE

One of my most rewarding experiences at Auburn University has been my role as a Learning Assistant for Organic Chemistry. In this capacity, I actively fostered class engagement by providing support to my fellow students in understanding complex organic chemistry concepts. I collaborated closely with the professor to develop a variety of multimedia learning materials, including practice tests and Kahoot Quizzes. Additionally, I maintained weekly office hours to offer personalized one-on-one help, all in pursuit of helping my peers excel in the course. Please feel free to explore some of the Kahoot quizzes I've created below.

I served as a Peer Tutor for the College of Human Sciences and Auburn Athletics. In this role as a peer tutor for Nutritional Biochemistry, I am promoted peer learning by hosting regular office hours and creating additional resources like practice tests and study guides, and holding study sessions before each exam. My commitment to Auburn Athletics required providing personalized one-on-one review sessions on a weekly basis to assist student athletes in effectively managing their demanding coursework. I also was able to ensure that they were prepared for exams by conducting pre-exam review sessions, which feature custom Kahoot quizzes and targeted explanations of challenging course concepts. Feel free to explore some of the Kahoot quizzes I've designed for our study sessions below!

SHADOWING

During my experience at Frensesius Dialysis Care, I had the privilege of shadowing the Renal Dietitian, Mrs. Hickman. This opportunity provided me with a understanding of renal care. Through my shadowing experience, I observed the treatment process but also in learned about the dietary modifications that are crucial for patients undergoing dialysis. Additionally, I had the chance to explore various treatment options. This opportunity truly showed me how vast the world of dietetics is, but showed me the direct impact on the lives of those in need.

During my time at the East Alabama Medical Center, I had a diverse range of experiences that increased my understanding of Clinical Dietetics. I attended a Diabetes Information Class led by the skilled diabetes dietitian, Lauren Thigpen, and participated in essential administrative tasks like paperwork filing and faxing. Additionally, I observed a diabetes-related appointment and an eating disorder-related appointment, where I engaged in client follow-up calls and further paperwork management. My exposure extended to the ICU, where I gained insights into charting processes and shadowed the clinical dietitian, Carly Drake, as she interacted with patients. My responsibilities continued outside of the hospital, where I assisted Mrs. Thigpen in planning and coordinating a nutrition activity at the OurHouse camp. In this setting, I had the opportunity to engage in a cooking and nutrition activity with children. These diverse experiences have deepened my appreciation for the multifaceted nature the Dietetics career.

During my volunteer time with the Auburn Athletics Facility, I had the pleasure of working with most of the sports dietitians at the Auburn Wellness Kitchen and Field house. During my role in food preparation at the Wellness Kitchen, I crafted sandwiches and various pre-packaged meals for athletes while maintaining an eye on inventory levels. Furthermore, in the Field house, I prepared smoothies, collagen shots, and other dietary offerings for athletes, monitored inventory, and prepared necessary supplements. This consistent and focused approach to food preparation and inventory control was vital in meeting the nutritional needs of the athletes.

I was fortunate to participate in an educational experience provided by VCOM at Auburn University. This involved a collaborative class with students from nursing, dietetics, and pharmacy programs to participate in a Food Science Nutrition Lab. In preparation for our class, we engaged in independent study and case studies. During our in-class sessions, we put our knowledge into practice by creating recipes and exploring the medical insights behind the specific foods we prepared. This approach allowed us to gain an understanding of how these foods impact our bodies, making this class a well-rounded learning experience.

I have been fortunate to participate in various shadowing and volunteering opportunities alongside my medical nutrition class, particularly in Interprofessional Education (IPE) clinics, which have given me valuable hands-on experience. In the IPE Clinics, I had the privilege of contributing to the community by participating in events such as the Latino Health Fair and assisting at the Auburn United Methodist food bank.

At the Latino Health Fair, my fellow students and I organized an activity where we created homemade trail mix and provided essential nutrition education to attendees. Additionally, I had the opportunity to oversee flu shot vaccinations and perform blood glucose level measurements by pricking fingers, a crucial aspect of diabetes nutrition management. Furthermore, I had the chance to engage in a medical nutrition laboratory where we not only measured our own glucose levels but also practiced finger pricking techniques on ourselves and others. These experiences have enhanced my practical knowledge and skills in the field of medical nutrition.
